In May of 2022, during my morning coffee and guitar ritual, four distinct measures appeared from nowhere. These musical ideas were not only complete and never edited, but I had a sure feeling that this was the basis of a piece; already demanding to be written.

Loads of ideas come through my fingers, but rarely do I instantly know that they are going to be actual finished pieces.

OK, what do I do now?

This seems to be the question as I sketch, struggle, curse, become confounded and obsessed with finding the answers or the way forward with the piece. Often I feel like a detective hot on the trail of solving a mystery.

In August, at the annual Three of a Perfect Pair Camp, Markus Reuter (Stick Men, Crimson Projeckt) was teaching private lessons in the downstairs cafe. Though we are friends, Markus never pulls any punches.

After I finished playing this piece, he looked directly at me and said, "Beautiful, wonderful, perfect."

He also said that a good rule of thumb is to always "vary the answer" or the answer being the musical response to the "question" coming before it. Hence the title.

Though every note is exactly where it should be, there is something here that remains a mystery.
