about
This is an homage, if you will, to the common weed. Not the fun kind, nay, but the inevitable and indomitable nuisance for gardeners and lawn-care folks alike.
Todd Burge reached out to me about his Seed Project. I was intrigued and honored. I looked at Todd's lyrics for inspiration.
So, thanks, Todd, for the invite! I had no idea that this song was in my writing wheelhouse.
(’cause) I’m a weed
A weed with many seeds
Scattered by the breeze
Growin’ where I please.
I don’t like the word invasive.
I much prefer persuasive.
‘cause everywhere ya go, you know
I’m gonna flow
And you best just learn to embrace it.
I’m not considered permissible
Just a nuisance and dismissible,
But how many plants did you give half
a chance
Before they were called medicinal?
I dominate and radiate
every corner of the earth.
Gimme sun or water
Just a tiny bit of dirt.
You can plant your pretty flowers,
Grow your mighty veg,
Toil in the soil
And still I’ll invade your garden beds.
The sun is hot, you sweat a lot,
It’s painful on your knees.
Madly dig, the game is rigged
So don’t look so displeased.
‘Cause down below you know
I’m growin’ right beneath your feet.
As you’re walking in your fancy shoes,
I’m growing in the street, in the
street!
I see you’ve got a nice landscape
A hedgerow that’s all shipshape
But deep entwined ‘s a gnarly vine
That you won't see 'til it's too late.
I am the ultimate obstacle
Devastating, but phenomenal
It’s basic, it’s simple, ya silly fool
To get rid of me is impossible.
Why would anyone want to poison
me?
How could they have that much spite?
Hey ya pill, I’m holding up your hill.
You’d think you’d want to treat me
nice
And put away the herbicide.
No? OK.
I stretch out my fingers
Send forth my vines
Won’t be stopped ‘til I’m locked,
Every treetop is entwined.
I don’t mean to so hateful
Nor bitter or ungrateful
But when you plant your garden of
Eden,
Just remember…
you’ll be doin’ some weedin'.

A shout-out to my fellow Velvet Brother, Greg Wegmann, for inspiration of the concept "medicinal."
I've have been playing, performing and composing for more years than I can recall. My music reflects a variety of influences; not the least of which is the natural beauty of West Virginia.
