about

The interim between West Liberty and Peabody, or more specifically, the summer of 1981, was a bit of a puzzle for me.

More than a puzzle. I felt quite lost - drifting without aim or purpose.

I had a bachelor's in music education, but being a band director or elementary school teacher was simply not for me. Teaching guitar lessons and playing gigs was fine, but something was missing.

So, what to do?

Not a clue.

This piece was born out of that feeling lost, inconsequential and not quite sure where my life was headed.

Forty-some years later, this piece somehow sounds hopeful. Enjoy.

About the piece:

The ostinato, the repetitive part, reminds me of a clock - ticking blithely or indifferently on. Three simple themes follow. The first - very innocent and naive. The second (reckless guitar) is more spirited, but ultimately very restrained. The third theme is very Frippian. These three themes return at the end.
All the while, distorted guitars echo and slither about.

The cover photo is a closeup of a hammock at Ocracoke Island, 2016.
